About Us.
When founders Ericka and Mattaniah had children, they began spending their evenings singing and reading stories to them as parents do. One evening as the children were winding down Ericka sat on the big chair in the bedroom and gathered the little ones to her lap and crafted a story in the moment about a little owl who had trouble staying in bed.
That simple story was told and retold to our children til eventually it was written down and then dreamed about. What would these characters look like? How sweet their voices must be. So they talked about what it might look like to put it all together into a format other families could enjoy, and youtube was the only option they imagined possible. So, after reaching out to several illustrators they felt a special connection with Grabriela Issa Chacón, a graphic designer and illustrator from Mexico. Putting the illustrations and story together they recorded some of their children and friends for the voice over and uploaded the storybook to youtube. Later that year they were speaking with a friend who recommended they start a proper book publishing company for the children’s book and the others to come as Ericka had been writing companion stories to follow up the first. That friend from San Diego also invested seed money to order the first wave of books.
Over the next several months, Mattaniah put together a proper business and worked to learn all he could about publishing and registering a book. By Christmas that year they had 1,000 copies of Tippy the Owl, and by new years they were sold out.
A couple years went by and other projects took priority of the book company, but they were learning all they could about business development. Reinspired by encouragement from fans of the first book they worked to put out the second book, order more copies and spend evenings and weekends shipping books off from online orders. With several more books in the queue and a passion to bring joy through stories, they sold their house and are pouring their lives into building something bigger than themselves.
